The Commandant General's Medal was instituted by Warrant dated 20 January 1965 (Government Gazette No 1018, 5 February 1965) and Regulations in 1965 (Government Notice 183 - Government Gazette No 1024, 12 February 1965).
Even though it had not been formally instituted until 1965, the medal was awarded from 1962.
It was awarded annually to the Champion Shot of the Defence Force and Reserve.
The obverse consists of a five pointed castle framed by a circular wreath of Protea flowers. Two rifles crossed over a circular target against the representation in the background of a range on which four targets are displayed.
Above the legend: "KOMMANDANT-GENERAALS MEDALJE - COMMANDANT GENERALS MEDAL".
The reverse bears the Coat of Arms of the Republic of South Africa.
The ribbon is 32mm wide and is orange with 6.4mm sky blue edges and a 6.4mm dark blue central stripe.
A separate silver bar is awarded for each subsequent year in which the medal was won. In the centre of each bar is a circular silver button incribed with the year in which each subsequent medal was won.
Separate circular buttons, each incribed with the year in which each subsequent medal was won, are worn on the ribbon bar, when ribbons alone are worn, to denote each subsequent award of the medal.
The Commandant General's Medal was Superseeded by the SADF Champion Shot Medal in 1975.

The SADF Champion Shot Medal was instituted by Warrant dated 1 October 1975 (Government Gazette No 4874, 17 October, 1975).
A separate medal was awarded to the Champion Shot of the South African Defence Force in any one year in the following categories: full-bore, small-bore, service shooting and pistol shooting.
The Medal was struck in silver in the form of a five pointed Castle framed by a circular wreath of Protea leaves and flowers; bearing in a circle two rifles crossed over a circular target against a representation in the background of a shooting range, above the legend, "SAW - KAMPIOENSKUT MEDALJE SADF CHAMPION SHOT MEDAL".
The reverse bears the Coat of Arms of the Republic of South Africa.
The ribbon is 32mm wide and is orange with 6.4mm sky blue edges and a 6.4mm dark blue central stripe.
A separate silver bar was awarded for each subsequent year in which the medal was won. In the centre of each bar is incribed the year in which each subsequent medal was won.
Separate circular buttons, each incribed with the year in which each subsequent medal was won, are worn on the ribbon bar, when ribbons alone are worn, to denote each subsequent award of the medal.
The SADF Champion Shot Medal replaced the earlier Commandant General's Medal in 1975.
Champions who had already received the Commandant General's Medal were awarded clasps to add to their existing medal.
The award of the SADF Champion Shot Medal was discontinued with effect from 27 April 2003, by Presidential Warrant dated 16 April 2003 (Government Gazette 25213 dated 25 July 2003).
No new medal has yet been instituted to replace it.
